HTC Flyer announced a 7" Android 2.4 Gingerbread device

And I thought HTC will be going silent at MWC 2011 (an impossibility). They have announced, I think, the most devices at the event in Barcelona, Spain. Of course, there are smartphones too but the first device I want to blog about is the HTC Flyer. Finally, the Taiwanese company's tablet challenger. Don't think its just another Android Honeycomb tablet with dual-core processor because it ain't. Specs and details after the break.

The device, as what I have earlier will be a bit different if not very different from the other Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet announced because it is simply not running on that platform. HTC have opted to port Android 2.4 Gingerbread on to the device for a reason that I am not sure of. Anyway, the specs.

HTC Flyer specs:
  • Android 2.4 Gingerbread
  • HTC Sense UI
  • 1.5GHz single-core processor
  • 7" (1024 x 600) TFT touch screen display
  • 1GB of RAM
  • HSPA+ (14.4Mbps)
  • 32GB Flash storage (internal)
  • Pressure sensitive capacitive stylus (HTC Scribe technology)
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1.3MP front camera
  • 4,000 mAh battery
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • microSD card slot
  • OnLive cloud gaming (interesting)
  • Flash and HTML5 support
  • Internal GPS antenna
  • Ambient Light Sensor
  • G-Sensor
  • Digital Compass
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • Availability: Q2 2011 (globally)
So why Android 2.4 Gingerbread, which by the way confirms reports and rumors about that version of Gingerbread? I do not know really, maybe because they wanted their tablet to be a very good differentiator from the rest using the stock Android Honeycomb? Or they really did not have enough time customizing the Honeycomb UI? Or is the Honeycomb UI even customizable? There can be a lot of reasons but HTC is still up their with those dual-core, Honeycomb tablets. HTC Sense is one of the best UIs for Android and a lot of us like it. And about the single-core processor? It's still has a clock speed of 1.5GHz that isn't bat is it?
