Using a standard alphanumeric keypad, when it had it's time, is the fastest way to type in your text messages. With the coming of the touchscreens it seems we will then have to forget the simplicity and the ease of typing using the alphanumeric keypad. Typing on touchscreen devices requires a lot of attention from users it is also error prone, even with the help of predictions, auto-completion and whatnot. But until today, there's hope to bringing that unconscious typing we loved on those alphanumeric keypads. And it's called 8Pen.
The video explains everything, so I bet this new piece of technology would be incorporated into touchscreen devices in the future.
