I'm not an expert in these HSPA+, LTE, and WiMax stuff but one thing is for sure. 4G is coming to town baby! According to ITU (International Telecommunication Union) the requirement for 4G mobile technology is that a network should be able to give peak data speeds of 100Mbits/sec for high mobility access (like using your mobile phone in accessing the internet) and up to 1Gbits/sec (100Mbps) for nomadic or local access (like home internet). Globe, have done there share of this technology in the Philippines by launching an being the Philippines' first 4G carrier. And today, they have announced that they will or they have started rolling out their 4G mobile technology to its users.
The technology that they are launching is the HSPA+ standard which will be able to give customers data rates (theoretical) of up to 21Mbps. This technology is being used by T-Mobile USA (their version of 4G in the US).
Currently, Globe is saying that the HSPA+ 4G tech is covering cities/sites across the capital like in Makati, Pasay, Las Pinas, Taguig, and the City of Manila. And "By end-2011, Globe expects to increase its 4G presence dramatically with continued expansion planned into 2012." Of course, before you can use this 4G stuff of it all, your phone needs to be 4G capable. You're phone should have HSPA+ support or a radio in it that would allow it to use the HSPA+ network. If it ain't your stuck with 3G (assuming you have a 3G phone).
Globe have also started testing another 4G technology in the country. The technology is called 3GPP Long Term Evolution or more commonly known as LTE 4G technology (or simply LTE). I am not sure if Verizon, in the US, uses this specific technology (3GPP LTE) as their own version of 4G in the US. All I know is that the US' largest network carrier uses LTE to provide highspeed mobile internet to their customers. And oh boy did their first LTE device get great reviews with it's internet speeds, the HTC Thunderbolt 4G. A testament to it's speed is a video comparing 3G with the Thunderbolt's 4G capabilities (YouTube link). Sprint, the US' third largest network on the other hand, uses the WiMax technology to offer their customers their version of 4G.
With Globe's implementation of the HSPA+ technology I believe we should be able to start seeing 4G capable phone on their store shelves. To give you a hint, the HTC Sensation is coming to the US as a 4G device with T-Mobile USA (HSPA+). You get the picture right?
