Currently, the only device that is and will be running on BlackBerry's QNX-based platform is the soon to be launched BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Then people ask, will the QNX OS ever gonna be brought to BlackBerry smartphones and eventually replace BlackBerry OS?
According to some reports by Berry Review, the Canadian company, RIM, have "cranked" up a project known internally as "Highlander" which is basically RIM's effort to essentially combine their latest smartphone OS, BlackBerry OS 6.1, and the PlayBook's QNX-based platform and will eventually be the BlackBerry OS 7. Unfortunately, this I believe is an unconfirmed report so there is no solid launch date, and RIM have not announced the BB OS 7 yet. RIM, however, said that they are currently in the "early stages" of the platform and is planning to push it out by next year.
With regards to BlackBerry 6.1, it is said to be behind schedule because of "some miscommunication between the various teams working on it". Bur RIM noted that they are happy with what is going on so far, most specially the "Liquid Graphics" incorporated into the software.
Anyway, if RIM officially announces and releases BB 6.1 sure enough I will be blogging about it.
