Well, according to reports from Pocket-lint, Google is preparing to release Android 2.4 Gingerbread in April. You ask, why is it still called Gingerbread? The answer, to create a division between Google's two distinctively different platforms (for tablets and smartphones) Android 2.4 Gingerbread will be the last Android version for smartphones before the Android OS (both for smartphones and tablets) will come together as one, well, I think that's what Google wants in the future.
It is reported that a tipster of Pocket-lint reported that ViewSonic will be launching a device, the ViewSonic ViewPad 4, running on Android 2.4 Gingerbread, and the tipster confirmed the OS' version maybe through a hands-on experience with the device?
The new version of Gingerbread has one main feature in it, the ability to support dual-core apps that are basically for those tablets with dual-core processors in them. That way, apps basically made for dual-core tablets can run on Android 2.4 devices.
"Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS will initially create a divide between smartphones and tablets. Android 2.4 will apparently mark the beginning of a process that will merge the smartphone and tablet operating systems, at least where apps are concerned." - Neowin
