This is extremely good news for people who uses the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10! Sony Ericsson have once said that the Xperia family of smartphones (excluding the new ones) will stay with Android 2.1 Eclair and will not be upgraded to any higher version of the Android OS. Fortunately, the Swedish company changed their minds and have announced that the Xperia X10 will get not 2.2 Froyo but Android 2.3 Gingerbread in the end of Q2 or early Q3 of this year!
Sony Ericsson's official blog have this to say:
"However, I am happy to inform you that this has changed. We plan to bring an upgrade to Android Gingerbread for the XperiaTM X10 to generic trade kits end Q2 / early Q3 this year.... The great work on our 2011 products XperiaTM PLAY, XperiaTM arc and XperiaTM neo actually has enabled us to start the work in a special project bringing Gingerbread to the XperiaTM X10."
Sony Ericsson previously believed that the features on Android 2.1 Eclair is enough to give the Xperia owners a satisfactory experience with their phones. Since they had the chance to work with the 2.3 Gingerbread platform on their newer Xperia family, they found out that 2.3 Gingerbread is actually possible to deliver that version of Android to the Xperia X10.
So end of Q2 and early Q3 is when we should all be expecting this update to arrive. Anyway, the blog also pointed out that the update will not be available OTA (Over-The-Air) so you need to connect your phones to your PCs for you to get the upgrade. Anyway I will be blogging if they officially release the update already. Meanwhile if you really want to go extremely techie, click on out trusty source link below. They have a lot of techie stuff in their that they mentioned.
