When Microsoft announced when the OS, Windows Phone 7, will be available and released, they never gave an exact date but they just said, "in time for the Holiday Season". But Microsoft released the OS to RTM yesterday, meaning the OS is released to manufacturing. But we have to think and realize that there is nothing to manufacture actually, like what a Windows 7 OS needs, DVDs and what not. So what does RTM in regards with the Windows Phone 7 mean? Base on my source it means that the OS is released to manufacturers. The way I understand it is that the OS is given to its partner mobile phone manufacturers to maybe tweak or what not a bit on the OS. Microsoft sees the OS as ready thus giving the OS to the manufacturers allows its partners to install it to their phones in time for their phones to be launched. We can actually expect Windows Phone 7 phones by next month if everything goes to plan.
There were also a few minor changes made to the OS since the Technical Preview stage. Namely, you can now filter Facebook contacts so only the people you really know show up in your integrated contact list. Also in Facebook territory, you can like posts straight from the People hub and quickly post a message to someone’s wall directly.
Now it’s time for Samsung, LG, HTC and all the other smartphone makers to step up their game and work hard to finish integrating the OS with their devices, so we can finally play with WP7 in retail hardware.
